Google Adopts Gemini 3.5 Flash as Standard: AI Answers Dominate Search Results

On 10 July 2026, Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the global standard for search results, meaning AI-generated answers now prominently feature at the top, displacing traditional blue links downwards.

On 10 July 2026, Google implemented one of the most significant changes in its 27-year history: Gemini 3.5 Flash is now the global standard for every search query. This means that, as a user, you will now by default see an AI-generated answer at the top of the search results page. The familiar list of ten blue links, which formed the backbone of Google Search for decades, now only appears below this AI overview and often ‘below the fold’. Liz Reid, VP of Search at Google, called it “the biggest upgrade to our iconic search bar in over 25 years”.

What This Means for Your SME’s Visibility

This shift is no small adjustment; it’s a fundamental redefinition of visibility on Google. Where traditionally ranking high with blue links was crucial, the focus now shifts to being cited in Gemini’s AI answers. Studies show that when an AI answer appears, only 8% of users still click on a traditional result, compared to 15% without an AI answer. Furthermore, only 1% of users click on the source references within AI answers. This highlights that exposure now occurs within the AI answer itself, similar to earned media, rather than via a click to your website.

Your competition is no longer solely focused on ranking 1 in the traditional list; it’s about whether Gemini cites you at all. For certain sectors, such as news & media and consumer electronics, visibility is already dominated by a small group of brands. However, this also creates opportunities for SME entrepreneurs in sectors like finance and industry, where competition is still less concentrated, to build AI visibility.

What This Means for You?

As an SME entrepreneur in the Netherlands, it’s essential to adapt your SEO strategy to this new reality. Here are the key action points:

  • Focus on expertise and authority: Ensure your content is exceptionally high-quality, packed with original research and first-class expertise. Google’s guidelines for E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) are more important than ever.
  • Optimise for AI citation: When creating content, don’t just think about keywords, but also how your information can serve as the best, most concise, and authoritative answer to a question.
  • Clear and structured content: AI models process structured and easy-to-understand information more efficiently. Use clear headings, bullet points, and answers that get straight to the point.
  • Monitor and adapt: Keep a close eye on your content’s performance, both in terms of traditional rankings and how often you are cited in AI Overviews. Analyse which content performs well in AI answers and learn from it.

The battle for visibility has changed. It’s no longer primarily about ranking at the top of the blue links, but about being seen in the AI-generated answers that Google now presents as standard. This is your chance to innovate your content strategy and stay ahead of the curve.
