Google automatically expands AI Overviews in search results

Google has confirmed that AI Overviews now expand automatically for certain search queries; what does this full-screen answer mean for your SME's visibility?

Google has confirmed that AI Overviews expand automatically into a full-screen answer for specific search queries. Where users previously had to click a button to read the full AI summary, the system now dynamically expands the response as soon as Google determines it to be the most valuable option. The change was first spotted by SEO specialists and has now been officially confirmed by Google.

The full-screen display mainly appears for informational searches and definitions. In these cases, an interactive ‘AI Mode’ prompt is shown immediately, allowing the user to ask follow-up questions. If someone has already started scrolling down the page, the automatic expansion is interrupted so as not to disrupt the search experience.

Why this matters for SMEs

Previously, AI Overviews took up only a limited area at the top of the search results. With this dynamic expansion, traditional organic search results are pushed entirely below the fold for key queries. Without scrolling, searchers will only see the generative answer and its cited source links.

This brings distinct changes for your online visibility:

  • Increase in zero-click searches: Users find their answer immediately on-screen and are less likely to click through to external websites.
  • Crucial role for AI citations: If your website is not cited as a source in the AI Overview, you will be virtually invisible in the initial screen view for these full-screen answers.
  • Searchers stay within the AI environment: By displaying the follow-up question box immediately, searchers remain engaged inside Google’s search interface for longer.

What does this mean for you?

Although traditional SEO remains important for specific and conversion-focused queries, this development requires an active shift towards Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO).

To remain visible even with full-screen AI answers, you can take the following steps:

  • Focus on unique expertise: AI models summarise general knowledge. Provide specific industry expertise, proprietary data and real-world experience that AI systems find valuable enough to cite.
  • Structure your content clearly: Use clear headings, concise answers and structured data (Schema.org), making it easy for Google to scan your content and pull it in as a source.
  • Target the bottom of the conversion funnel: Full-screen AI answers mainly appear for broad, informational queries. Searches with a specific brand or commercial intent are more likely to retain direct blue links.
