Google Lighthouse now tests discoverability for AI agents

In Lighthouse 13.5, Google adds a new audit that checks whether AI agents can easily scan your website and services.

In the latest version of its testing tool Lighthouse (version 13.5), Google has introduced a notable expansion: an audit for Agentic Resource Discovery (ARD). This test checks whether a website contains specific files and references, such as ard.json and llms.txt, which help AI agents quickly understand a company’s services and tools.

Is your site not warning about or measuring this yet? With this update, Google is taking a clear step towards analysing how suitable a website is for AI-driven browsing. While technical SEO traditionally focuses on how search engines like Googlebot index your pages, this audit specifically targets the interaction between your site and autonomous AI assistants.

Why AI agents scan your website

An increasing number of consumers and businesses are using AI assistants to perform searches and tasks. When such an AI agent searches for a suitable company, it scans the site for structured information about what the business actually offers. If that structure is missing or the agent cannot process the information properly, the AI assistant will quickly opt for a competitor.

With the new Lighthouse audit, developers and marketers can immediately check whether a website has the correct specifications to be read by AI agents. Although the test is separate from Google’s regular search results, this move shows that discoverability for AI systems is securing a permanent place within web analytics.

What does this mean for your SME?

As an SME business owner, you do not need to overhaul your entire website right away, but it is wise to prepare for this development:

  • Check your accessibility: Review your robots.txt file to ensure you are not accidentally blocking AI crawlers and technical files.
  • Consider what AI needs to know about you: Make sure your core activities and services are listed clearly and structurally on your website so that AI systems do not have to guess.
  • Scan your site in due course: As soon as Lighthouse 13.5 becomes widely available in Chrome DevTools and PageSpeed Insights, you can test your site for AI agent compatibility.

Those who ensure their technical infrastructure is ready for AI agents now will remain visible when potential customers outsource their search queries to smart assistants.
