Google has dramatically increased the frequency of AI Overviews in brand-related searches. Recent data from analytics firm DemandSphere shows that AI summaries appeared in over 80% of brand searches by the end of September. At the start of that same month, the figure stood at around 26%. A peak was reached on 27 September, when a staggering 90.5% of brand queries were presented with an AI-generated answer.
Supplementary research by Chris Long, co-founder of Nectiv, confirms this trend. In a sample of 100 well-known brands, 93% of brand searches triggered an AI Overview. Although these were major organisations, the data shows that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are also increasingly seeing such summaries appear at the top of their search results.
Previously, when a potential customer searched directly for your company name, they would immediately see your official website at the top of the results. With the expansion of AI Overviews, Google now determines what kind of summary the user sees first, compiled from various sources across the web.
Why this directly impacts SMEs
This shift changes the way searchers perceive your brand. Instead of clicking through directly to your homepage, a user reads the AI summary first. This presents specific challenges:
- Potential drop in direct clicks: If the requested information is already included in the AI Overview, direct visits to your website may decline.
- Information management: Google gathers data from a variety of sources. Outdated or inaccurate information on external websites could end up straight in the AI summary.
- Citations and authority: The sources Google selects and cites within the AI block determine how credible and professional your business appears.
What does this mean for you?
As an SME owner, it is essential to closely monitor what search engines display about your organisation. Consider taking these practical steps:
- Test your own brand name: Search for your company name on Google regularly to see if an AI Overview appears and check its content.
- Manage your digital footprint: Ensure your details on review platforms, industry directories, and business profiles are up to date and accurate.
- Provide clear brand information: Make sure your ‘about us’ page, service pages, and FAQs contain clear, factual information so that AI models extract the correct details.
